Der rundere Mond

Cao Kefei

A theatre research from Cao Kefei and Mats Staub

Living between cultures has become the epitome of the global village. The Beijing based theatre director Cao Kefei, a traveller between Europe and Asia, and the dramaturg Mats Staub, make us discover the opportunities as well as the problems related to a life between different cultures. In their theatre research «Der rundere Mond» (A moon much rounder) we get to perceive particular life stories with all our senses: They speak to Chinese women who live in Switzerland and are married to Swiss men. Women, who have faced a strange culture even in the intimacy of their private sphere. How do they perceive the Western life style? How do the various cultural influences come into their biographies and their way of life?
Together with their Chinese-Swiss team, Cao Kefei and Mats Staub combine diverse theatrical means: non-professional actors join professional actors on stage. Documentary reports and poetic texts intertwine. The presence of the participants is expanded through video projections. The impressive graphic expression of the Chinese language and writing meets the sobriety of Western communication... «Der rundere Mond» joyfully plays with cultural contrasts and prejudices.
