Overseas 2010

Global migration has a lasting influence on our cohabitation. At the beginning of the 21st century it positions the questions about origin and about a sense of belonging in new ways. For Simone and Monika Truong, the Solothurn born daughters of Chinese parents, dealing with their own identity is intrinsically related to their biography, which fuels their artistic work. This very personal starting point is the beginning of an artistic journey during which they bridge the gap between countries and cultures while they are themselves standing on the very border between the East and the West. Together with a group of Chinese artists, «Overseas 2010» takes a look at how the individual introduces him/herself into a collective identity, when it is being created in the very confrontation with alterity - in this case during the rehearsals and performances in Switzerland. «Overseas 2010» is a project about essential human experiences. It addresses the relation between people who are experiencing both the reluctant need for belonging and the need for individual autonomy.
«Overseas 2010» is part of the cultural programme «Swiss Chinese Cultural Explorations» by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. A first work-in-progress was awarded the Premio Förderpreis in 2008 (2nd place).
