Performance and Choreography from China
with prior discussion at 6pm
Even in the mega-cities like Beijing and Shanghai it isn't easy to find the performance scene or the young choreographers who work outside of the few big theatres and companies. There is very little public funding and infrastructure set up for them. One can meet them though - for instance in abandoned factories - thanks to hints from established artists who support them and further their development. People are very interested in their work, even without any presence in the media or professional communication strategies. Many of them are extraordinarily polyvalent and know a lot about the work of their colleagues in the East and West. We invited three of them to show us each a piece of their work. Li Ning was a sculptor before he started studying with the renown choreographer Jin Xing. He now creates performances in the public sphere, the documentations of which are shown at international film festivals. Zhang Mengqi (born 1987) got her diploma from the Dance Academy of China Minorities University and is a self-employed artist in Beijing. Her performance is a danced dialogue with her mother who is present on her body as a projection. Before her education in contemporary dance Xiao Ke (born 1979) she concentrated on Chinese folk dance. When she was 20 years old, she founded her own dance school in Shanghai. Everybody seems to know her, she appears everywhere - often with solo performances which she created specifically for the site.
