The saying “Empower a girl, transform a community.” seems to apply perfectly for the Wifey collective. During their years active, Wifey has established itself as a fixture in the nightlife of Zurich’s Langstrasse, from throwing “Heartbreak Hotel” functions to hosting the unofficial afterparty of ASAP MOB.
In 2020 the collective, composed of Lila Loit, Lhaga Koondhor, Asmara, Yesh and Baby Val, will bless the Südbühne stage of Gessnerallee with their infamous Karaoke night on the 10th of December.
A moment prolonged over several hours, but freed of the weight of minutes, of the passage of time, the Karaoke nights organized by Wifey reclaim the mockable, square and banal prejudice sadly too often associated with the western lens on East Asian culture.
Since their creation in 2013 the collective Wifey believes in the power of communal support, challenging stereotypes while celebrating and nurturing genuine diversity. While some say that the night is the unlit stage of an enigmatic opera, this group of friends use that stage to unapologetically reject the prejudice that Western narratives project onto women from the migrant Asian diaspora. Championing creative talents from marginalized communities, each member finds strength in collaborations, generating new ideas and skill sharing.
In their constant effort of inclusion, the women’s DJ collective invited Floral.tv, a Zurich-based floral design studio founded by Jenni Tschugmell, to take part in the event. The studio specialized in flower and set design uses a unique combination of colours and materials, allowing people to dive into a surreal and dreamy world. The sense of collectivism in this gathering as a ritual of unification that this night stands for is particularly enhanced by Shamiran Istifan’s installation Ex Amore Vita on view in the space.
