Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Belgien / Argentinien)

Five dance couples from Argentina encounter a contemporary dance couple from Belgium in m¡longa. In Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s ode to the tango all the dancers circle one another, united by sweeping ornamental gestures, weave garlands from lyrical movements, dance as couples back to back, swap partners or create completely new formations. The Belgian choreographer brings the passion and mood of the tango to life in front of colourful film imagery of the city of Buenos Aires. Cherkaoui, who has always felt at home between different cultures, has made tango his own: in m¡longa, his choreography turns passion and sexual attraction into melancholy messages – a musical experience to behold.

Five tango musicians from Argentina accompany the couples live on stage and lure them into a captivating dialogue of physical and musical timing. Argentinian Fernando Marzan and Cherkaoui’s resident composer Szymon Brzóska worked on the music together.

m¡longa is produced by Sadler's Wells and co-produced by Steps.
